CWH Lancaster Western Canada Tour

Wed Jul 28, 2010 10:10 pm

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum's Avro Lancaster has now begun one of its biggest tours ever. Over 23,000 litres of fuel and 120 quarts of oil will be consumed during its 29 hours of flying time. Today the Lancaster was greeted by an enthusiastic crowd at Thunder Bay, Ontario. The rest of the itinerary is as follows:

July 30 - Aug. 2 WINNIPEG, MANITOBA
Aug. 4 - 8 CALGARY, ALBERTA
Aug. 13 - 15 ABBOTSFORD, BRITISH COLUMBIA
Aug. 17 - 18 EDMONTON, ALBERTA

After a quick stop back in Hamilton, the Lancaster heads out to the Windsor Airshow on Aug. 21 - 22.

At each stop, souvenirs will be available as well as tours inside the Lancaster. The Lancaster is not planning to return out west in the near future so this could be your last chance to see and hear this unique aircraft for quite some time.

I'm so glad that the ol Lanc is coming to town. I've booked time off of work to see her at Abbotsford. What a treat it will be to have her at the local airshow!

I'll see you there.

Peace,

David

I hear the Lancaster is having a great Western Tour. Currently in Calgary until the 8th.
Would be great to hear some comments and see photos from some of the Western Canada Wixers.
It has been wonderful event for many veterans reliving wartime and postwar service.
Keep track of it at http://www.warplane.com/Planetalk/LancTour2010.html or on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/page ... 7014811279

Well we hope you enjoy it!
It is one of the most unique aircraft I've had the pleasure of working on, and flying in.
It's worth the price of a Bomber Crew membership. Something any warbird junkie should do.
Add it to your life's bucket list!

Hi everyone - I'm new to WIX and had the chance last Thursday to check out the CWH Mynarski Lancaster at the Calgary airport. For an extra $5 we could take the inside tour.

First off - the view from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology hangar. We also had the chance to check out some of the aircraft the maintenance students work on in the hangar like a Harvard and a early model 737-200.

Image

The line up to get in was over half an hour. A CWH member came along the line telling people if they were claustrophobic or having mobility problems that they may want to reconsider the inside tour!

Image

Glad I don't have mobility issues! It took some twisting and turning to get to the left after entering through the nose hatch and up to the cockpit.

Image

Here's a portrait of myself taken by my daughter, hunched over just aft of the cockpit. How did these young men get around in this aircraft in full flying gear? Heroes all.

Image

The view aft from the top hatch.

Image

Thanks to the CWH for the level of access they allowed - people enjoyed getting under the bomb bay and close up to the tail turret etc.

Image

The nose art - if you don't know the Mynarski story, google Andrew Mynarski.

Thanks again CWH for bringing her out west!

Cheers everyone,
John

Great photo of the Canadian Rockies with the Lancaster taken from the mid upper turret by crew woman Lisa on way to Abbotsford at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Canadian- ... 7014811279
What a sound that would be echoing off the mountains.

Received the disappointing news yesterday that the Edmonton visit was cancelled. Ah well, least I got to see her last year. :)

Just heard her fly over the area, she is home in Hamilton!
Heard weather was a factor for Edmonton.

Smoke from the BC fires, visibility is about a kilometer... I kid you not.
Edit... actually it's like 3 blocks!
