A Pointless "Name the Plane" Contest. WE HAVE A WINNER!

Wed Jul 28, 2010 10:26 am

I recently obtained this warbird photo and was going to post info about it but then decided first to have a little fun with the "WIX Brain Trust" just to see how good is our knowledge base.

Simple. Name the manufacturer and the official military, alpha-numeric designation for this helicopter. Hint. Don't be obvious.

Winner gets a cyber-pony.

We have a winner - CAP Flyer. Congrats! Cyber pony is in the mail.

Fifteen QS -55 drones were built in 1989 and 1990 under an Army contract. Sikorsky S-55's were modified with the addition of sponsons, extended tail fairing, and the fiberglass nose extension to simulate the radar signature of the Mi-24 Hind. Fitted with remote flight systems, to my knowledge, all fifteen were expended in missle tests. Here's a link to one getting "downed."

Trick question, it is a helicopter.

I think it is the Mi-35 version of the Mi-24 built at the Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant

Sikorsky S-55 :D

Umm... does it actually have any designation? It's some sort of mockup or vis-mod made to resemble (albeit very loosely) an Mi-24 or Mi-35.

I cheated and Googled the answer.

I was right about the first part though. It is definetly a helicopter. 8)

Hey, I wonder if any of the QS-55's are still around. Would be an interesting addition to the Cold War Air Museum. :)
