CHAA Wings & Wheels Airshow and Carshow - July 24th 2010

Tue Jul 27, 2010 10:40 pm

Well, I haven't really had time to post any pics of this past weekend's show we had at Tillsonburg until now, so here goes.

All in all, the day went as well as it could with the weather we had.
Bad forecasts all week left most potential spectators and old car owners at home, but we still managed to get about 90 vintage cars out to the airport.

And to top it all off, the only visiting aircraft were the Harvard Aerobatic Team (although the 5 minute flight from Woodstock wouldn't really classify it as 'visiting') and the Russell Group's Hurricane and Bf-109E, which flew down Friday.
The aircraft that couldn't make it down because of weather or other reasons included:
RAG Spitfire IX (prop still out for overhaul)
Great War Flying Museum aircraft (they don't fly in the rain )
CH2A: Stearman and Chipmunks (2) (weather)
Dunnville Museum: Yale, Cornell, & T-28 (weather)

Here's the general view of most of the participants as well as the sky for most of the day.

Harvard 20436 'WLH went u/s early in the day so it became our 'static Harvard' to be used for cockpit tours.
Volunteer John Demmery (who is in his seventies) was on the wing pretty much all day giving kids a look inside. (and he was loving every minute of it)

We had two short but heavy downpours later in the day that kinda thinned the crowd out, but some of the pilots figured out how to stay dry:

How many people can you fit on a Clark tug? This was just after we got it un-stuck from the mud.

CHAA's own Dave Hewitt in the Hurricane and Rick Volker in the Bf-109 gave an awesome Battle of Britain re-enactment (twice!)

The show wrapped up with a seven Harvard formation flight with the CHAA formation team breaking off to let the aerobatic boys do their show.

However, the ceiling closed in so they were forced to do a low show

I managed to have a great day, however. I arrived at about 6AM and had all six CHAA Harvards towed out to the ramp by 7ish.

Also got to meet WIXer Jeff Hunt and figured out how to get a Clark tug out of the mud using only the other tractor and a Harvard tow bar in the pouring rain.

BTW the Bf-109 spent Saturday night in the hangar as well and was flown out by Rick on Sunday afternoon.

If you missed this show please keep in mind that we still have one airshow left this season on August 14th.
Please pray to the waether gods to let us have nice weather for at least one show this year.

We have been told that the RAG Spitfire and Hurricane will be attending and I've heard a rumour of the possibility of a certain four-engined bomber showing up.
I'll see what I can find out later on this week in terms of visiting aircraft.

Enjoy.
