New Garden Festival of Flight Air and Car Show

Thu Jun 10, 2010 9:33 pm

FYI,
The New Garden Air Show happens starting tomorrow in South East PA. In its 39th year, this is a great country air show with some neat twists. A very nice car show accompanies the air show, and there will be re-enactor displays, aerobatic demonstrations, and increased vendor space for food/merchandise. This year, it was expanded to a two day event to take advantage of great weather and to get some more acts. The David Tallichet Memphis Belle will be there, along with other warbirds and vintage and classic aircraft. Make sure to take advantage of the on-line ticket price discount.

I've been meaning to get to this show for a while now but it just does not look like I will be able to get there this year either.

At least I got my fix at Reading last week!

What other warbirds?

They are going to have to do better than "numerous other warbirds" on their site if they want to attract the interest of the buffs.

I'll be there. The two prior shows I've done there (2007 and 2009) they've had one or two warbirds flying. For instance, last year was a B-25 and a Dauntless. There really isn't a lot of room on that airport for a lot of planes...

B-17 "Movie Memphis Belle" is there. She flew out of Geneseo today for New Garden.

I attendied both days, though left early on Sunday (not sure if B-17 flew or not, it didn't Saturday). Show was good, Saturday's weather was good, Sunday was hot and humid. David Schultz Airshows did this show for the first time, and it was a good event. They "upped the ante" by bringing in Mohr Barnstorming, a Coast Guard HH-65 SAR demo, the B-17 and the B-2 flyover (Sat only). Add in the nice re-enactor encampment, Manfred Radius, a car show, MAAM TBM (static only, fuel leak), Matt Chapman, the Warbirds pin-up girls, Cecil County Fall-guys jumpers, Jason Flood's airshow debut, the usual L-bird, and trainers warbird flying, and the cool RC modelers stuff, and you have a super little show.

Thanks to John Mohr and Mark Denest for flying off of us, and for Buzz Cortese for flying the SNJ photo-ship! It was hotter and hazier than the photos tend to show.

More to come later.

Rich

Wow, great photos! Isn't that southeastern PA countryside gorgeous? I grew up just "down the road a piece" from Toughkenamon. Long, cold winters, but beautiful summers!

Did anyone get photos of the air show and car show displays? I'd love to see 'em.

Thanks, and yes, I shot pretty-much everything. I'll post some asap.

Rich,

Just an FYI - the MAAM TBM did not fly because of the logistics of trying to get it outside the crowd line, fly it and then get it back inside the crowd line without a towbar, available tug, or manpower to push it out and back. Plus all of that takes quite a bit of time to accomplish and with the schedule we were running would not have fit in. THAT is why it did not fly - I don't know who told you there was a fuel leak. There was no fuel leak. The TBM left New Garden and flew back home Sunday evening around 4:30 and sounded great on take-off. You should have stuck around!!

Just in case anyone was wondering why the B-17 "Movie Memphis Belle" did not fly on Saturday it was due to crosswinds on the runway which were a little higher than the crew wanted for take off and landing. She did in fact fly on Sunday and made 3 beautiful passes over New Garden before departing.

Thanks for that info, mea culpa on the misinformation on the TBM, that is what I had been told. I'll smack the guy who told me that with a fish. :)

Family duties kept me from staying for the show finale on Sunday, unfortunately. Having the -17 fly definitely made this a superb show, and even without, it was WELL worth the modest admission fee. I expect the show to be back even better next year. It's a beautiful area, and convenient to numerous metro areas (Wilmington, Phili, Baltimore).

Nice photos. And thanks to all for the nice complements about my home state! :D

P.S. to Steve: I always enjoy your airshow videos!!! Glad you have found WIX. Nice to know another warbird/airshow fan in the area. We are few compared to the rest of the country!
