Russian I-16

Thu Jun 10, 2010 1:43 pm

Back in August of 2003 while heading to Texas, I remember seeing a Russian I-16 fuselage which was being pulled on a trailer by a truck. I think was near the Texas-Arkansas border. Does anyone know about a Russian I-16 that was being transported at the time for restoration or some other purpose?

CAF or Fighter Factory are the only examples in the U.S. that come to mind right away...

The CAF example is part of a traveling display. Don't know if it was that far back though.

I photographed the plane in May of 2004 during Red Star at Castle Airport, CA, and it was a CAF plane.

And what about FHC's flying I-16 here @ KPAE?

I-16 Rata #45 has travelled more miles by trailer than air. It was in OSH 2003 then in Northern California in 2004. Returned to SoCal in 2006 then back to Midland 2007. Back to SoCal in May of 2008 for Col Bob Reiss memorial. Spent some time at CAF Riverside, CA before returning to Midland, Tx where it is now on display. There are three I-16s in the US. Yagen's, Allen's, and the CAF's. Paul Allen's (Flying Heritage Collection) is the only one that is currently flying. Flew June 19th this year (only scheduled flight this year).

I see the sixth (and final) ex-Tim Wallis one is now flying in Russia, so sadly none remain in New Zealand now.
