Shuttleworth D-Day Air Display 6th June 2010 - pics

You gotta love the English weather. A week of glorious sunshine leading up to the show, then on the day low cloud and drizzle all morning. Being Shuttleworth it tried to clear up in time for the display, but the resulting thunderstorm was spectacular. The weather played havoc with the display and sadly a number of visiting acts had to cancel due to the weather. Those that made it were warmly appreciated though.

Its nice opening the hangar doors and finding one of these!


There was some flying before the show, Peter Holloway took the Tomtit aloft for his first flight in it.


The restoration of the Living Van is progressing, there has been a lot of work put into it over the winter, it still doesnt provide tea though

A new display was the Piper Cub duo, one of the aircraft was active on D-Day. An excellent display sneaking up behind the trees. An often forgotten D-Day aircraft

'Dave Evans flew in Maurice Hammond's P51 "Janie", delayed by the weather but here nonetheless. Dave then met up with Alistair Jay in Ferocious Frankie out of Duxford and put on a superb pairs display sadly cut short by the thunderstorm at the end. Quite simply brilliant.

















For those of you stuck in the office on a Monday after the show, think yourselves lucky. The Engineers spent the day draining rainwater out of the aircraft and drying them off before cleaning them ready for the next show (which is on 19th June by the way). I want a new job!

What is the "Living Van", as I'm not familiar with what it is or what it was used for? Was it like an old school version of a "meals on wheels" or like a mobile home for pilots/crew?

I ALWAYS dig you Old Warden pix when you post 'em, it just takes me back to some great days over there....and makes me wanna return as soon as possible. A phenomenal venue.

As for the Living Van, pull up a chair!

Richard Shuttleworth was the Son and Heir of Joseph Shuttleworth who owned and ran the Clayton and Shuttleworth agricultural machinery company, Dorothy the traction engine in the shot was made by the company. The Collection is trying to commemorate this by restoring a number of pieces of agricultural equipment that have been stored on site for many years.

The Living Van was (we believe) an old converted railway wagon that was mounted on a chassis so that it could be towed behind a tractor. It has a number of bunks and a stove in it. It was basically there for farm hands to live out of while working the fields. Its currently undergoing a thorough restoration, the chassis and wheels have been reconditioned and any rotten woodwork has been replaced and its been repainted. The wood burning stove has been reconditioned and the next step is to finish the interior.

I am looking forward for a cup of tea from it. Its planned to use it as a base for the groundcrew on show days as well as being an exhibit in itself.

Nick, Joseph was Richard's Grandfather (1819-1883), his Father was Frank Shuttleworth (1845-1913).
