C1 Autopilot

Mon May 31, 2004 9:24 pm

I am working on a project to rebuild and make working the WWII C1 autopilot system. At present, we have a few members who had some experience rebuilding this system and we are looking to parse out some of the construction for this present round so we are not making terrible amounts of work for each of us. This involves lots of fun WIRING and rebuild of original WWII components. I am acquiring the components, and we are trying to build replicas of these units for display and operate. The C1 equipped with the Formation Stick was the later version built into late WWII B29, B24 and B17 systems. If anybody is interested in this project, please post your interest here and we'll try to find a method of common emailing so we can coordinate our resources. I think I can get enough components to make up quite a few of these units, so anybody would be able to put together a unit for their recreation room or museum. At present time, I am working on making new C1 stick grips to replace all the ones bogarted by Microsoft Flight Simulator patrons (you know who you are!).

These were all removed from the scrapped B-17's, B-24's, and B-29's due to spare use after WWII. I have seen literally pallets of these in certain locations. At some point, everything becomes rare. But these aren't rare yet. I'd value it from $10.00 to $35.00. If I were you, I'd hold onto it as a souvenir of your father.

I might be interested in helping. I got a C-1 formation control stick for Christmas (sans stick - thanks sim guys :( ) and have started looking into the feasibilty of making the control stick stand. It looks to be 3 cast pieces, some tube and some hardware. I`m just starting out, so does anybody have any tips on a home-smelting system? Not real deep pockets here, and if i could recop some of the loss by selling some extra units, that would be great.
