Enterprise appears in good shape for potential ferry flight

Mon Mar 15, 2010 2:01 pm

I know some here have posted Shuttle related stuff in the Hangar here, and since this really is museum/restoration related I'll go ahead and share this. It's a very interesting article about the Enterprise at the NASM Udvar-Hazy center. It looks like it got a good going over in preparation for a planned ferry flight to another museum, if and when Discovery ever makes the final flight to NASM.

The article goes into detail about the inspection process, and also about the amount of corrosion they found! (Which it sounds like will need to be fixed before it goes anywhere). Those who perform restoration work should find this interesting.

Great article thanks for sharing! Seems strange to be talking about their upcoming retirement! And nothing on the horizon as a replacement??

I know it never went into space and all, but I think that having the Enterprise would be awesome. There is alot of history in that thing for sure.

Fascinating!
I was at the MoF in Seattle yesterday and they had a large scale model of the Columbia at the entrance to the main exhibit hall with a sign discussing how they want to get one of the shuttles. All I could think of was I’m still waiting for them to publically display the B-17 and 29 they have. Maybe getting a shuttle would kick them into building large building to house all their bigger stuff!

Woldn't it be nice to preserve it mounted ontop of it's 747 carrier? Obviously it would need a BIG hangar and could you imagine painting the thing?!!
