FG-1D Corsair FAS 201, El Paso, TX

Sun Apr 24, 2005 7:07 pm

FG-1D Folks:

Fuerza Aerea Salvadore~na (FAS 201).

We are looking for info/data/pictures on the whereabouts of this aircraft circa May-1957-58, after a ground loop accident at El Paso, TX c.1957.

FAS 201 was on a ferry flight from Litchfield Pk. NAS, AZ to El Salvador when the accident ocurred. Pilot Lt. Sanchez. It received damage to the R/horizontal stab area, R/wing tip and a bent prop. (damage not shown here).

Some claim that FAS 201 was repaired and then was flown to El Salvador afterwards, others that it didn't. Someone in El Paso area/Airport may have worked, fixed or relocated this aircraft. Tks in advance for your help. Photo by the late Pete Bowers c. 1958.

FG-1D FAS 201 Folks:

Good Day!

Some recently discovered info/data about the whereabouts of this elusive sample FG-1D FAS 201 has emerged deep fm the Latin pyramids/archives to suggest the possibility that the above sample indeed survived & made back to the US c. 1974 in a wooden container.

p.s If you have any more/info data or real pics of this sample at El Paso, Tx c. 1957 or being fixed in the nearby area plz post.

I got all excited when I saw these pics--at last, proof of the trim color on this airplane! (I've never believed it was yellow, and have always thought it was Salvador light blue.) And then I see the "Color by..." logo in the lower left corner. So I assume these pics are colorized B&Ws? :? :(

Anyone happen to KNOW for a stone-cold FACT what color the trim color on the canopy frame, wingtips, etc. really is? Zorro, you seem to be sharp on LA Corsairs--any idea?

Good day!

Like always on the ball with the F4U details! Someone once told me when taking photos of aircraft that you really have to get real close to them & photograph the rivets & water spots in the am time! The guy was a pro off course!

The pic/drawing below is a pretty accurate scheme of that FAS 201 while hanging out at El Paso. Int c. May 157. The data came fm an IPMS European champion who won 1st place showing FAS Corsairs in diff schemes. His name is GM for now. Authentic pics do show those canopy frames ranging fm flat white, dull blue, the poss canary yellow & in some instances T-bird Red as some of the FAS pilot called at one time. c. '65. If you look at profiles drawings & models on the www you'll see even more samples.

I'm not that concerned about the canopy frame colors/schemes of the FG-1D FAS "Gull Grey" aircraft as to find out about the whereabouts & final destinations after being in the pasture at the FAS boneyard during the '60s. Specially one sample "FAS 201." This aircraft just did not go "puff" after sun tanning for some time at El Paso, Int Airport c. 1958 or so, someone moved it , repaired it & fix it for the final ferry to Ilopango. EL Salvador.

I believe as the evidence will show, that FAS 201 is alive & kicking today. (poss Australia). I'm 99.9 % on its track. Hang tight!!

p.s Have you ever seen an article on IPMS about FAS 201?? Do they show any real pictures of it??....2 B cont..!

No offense, Zorro, but I've seen so many inaccurate profiles over the years that in something like this, I only believe photographs. I've even seen profiles that didn't have the variant of the airframe itself right.

Do you have any original color photos of any of the FAS Corsairs?

Good day!

Rg! No worries that's why I mentioned the issue of frame schemes & misc areas. The one & only color photo of FAS 201 existe in Europe & it's owned my an IPMS guy name MG that won a 1st prize with a FAS model. That's how this whole thing started. The only thing that he mentioned when shown the previous colored pics is that they were pretty close & that he could tell & read colors in B/w photos for quite some time.

Do you have a savy IPMS poc in Europe that remembers this IPMS article . Magazine c. 2002?? I also have other color FAS FG-1Ds but only the blue schemes & one gull grey type. Will get back with you for other details. Do you have a poc/ IPMS poc at the El Paso, airport area??

I'm not in IPMS and have no official contact with them anywhere. I do have a couple friends who are in IPMS, that's it.

Is that "Kathleen"? If it is that is pretty much what she looked like when she showed up in Fabens inside a crate.

I miss Frank A.

Good day!

Hi! no it's not "K". "K" had a similar scheme like the "T-bird white" type and was some 300 yds away.

p.s Do you have pics of "K" when it arrived at the W. coast poss Long Beach?? All these pics are also the legacy of Frank!

Interesting and no-doubt real photo, but doesn't answer any questions about trim color. :(
