I have always wondered about that also. How about all the wreckage that piled up on the invasion beaches during the 6 week battle?

I would encourage anyone to read "Ghosts of Iwo Jima" by Robert Burrell. Any pre-concieved notions one has about the why and where of the Iwo battle, and, the subsequent justification of the dreadful cost in lives for use of the island as an airbase makes a fascinating read. Revisionist, to say the least. Draw your own conclusions.

I will definately put it on my list. I cant seem to read enough books about the battle. A recent book purchase for me is Iwo Jima: Red Blood Black Sand by Charles Tatum who was in the 5th Marine Division on Iwo. I have seen him interviewed on many documentaries. I wonder if he is still alive.
