Looking for Voodoo Photos

Sat Feb 13, 2010 5:43 pm

Hi folks - I am looking for images of F-101A/C and RF-101G/H airframes. Color scheme/unit/condition are not important. If you have any that you don't mind sharing, I'd like to add them to my collection.

My father flew the A/C models with the 92TFS/81TFW out of Bentwaters in the early '60s.

Thanks - Keith

Hi Cougar

Have you seen this thread on the FlyPast Forum? Some 81st TFW pics on there.

One of the things I've wondered for some time, being a scale modeler with an A/C conversion kit for the Hasegawa RF-101 kit in the stash, is whether A or C model Voodoos ever wore (in operational service) a scheme other than natural metal.

In asking on other forums, the answers I've always gotten have been no - the As and Cs were out of service prior to adoption of other schemes.

However, the following two pics from the link provided above appear to show an A or C Voodoo (is the same one in both pictures) in overall ADC Gray.

Several from my collection.
Took this photo of an RCAF CF-101 Voodoo at Cold Lake AFB, Alberta, Canada July 1977.

Garth - there were two 'grey ghost' 101s with the 81st - an A model and a C model. Evidence indicates they were painted like this in 1962 or early 1963. Both jets were based at Bentwaters (not Woodbridge). They both carried the 81TFW wing badge int he normal location, but never carried the colored tail markings.

There have been several theories put forth on the paint. My dad flew in the unit at the time, and though he remembered the two jets, he never did know why. The most common explanation I've heard is that it was an early experiment in corrosion control - an experiment that did not take hold on the 81st's jets. I've also heard that they were painted like this during depot level maintenance for some reason.

I have seen a shot of 56-0036, dated after the grey paint and before return to the US, that shows it with the normal bare metal scheme and tri-color tail. This would indicate that the grey paint was removed after a short period of time, but I have no firm confirmation of that.

Many of the 81st jets received grey paint on a lot of the fuselage upper services during 1964 and 1965, again reportedly as anti-corrosion efforts. Many of the photos of the jets I've seen during this time frame look as if they are painted overall silver, instead of the natural metal.

My father's jet was 56-0006.

There is a photo in an old Koko Fan Famous Airplanes of The World No. 59 of an F-101C in SEA scheme. Not being able to read Japanese I have no clue what the story is, perhaps it was a conversion a/c for RF-101G/H pilots.

CB - if that is indeed the case, I would love to see that photo. I do not have that publication. All photos I've seen of A/C models in guard service, prior to conversion to RF-G/H, are in silver/bare metal. SEA camo was applied to the birds during their conversion.

P51dman, thanks much for the offer, I've got shots of all of those birds.

Garth - thanks for the Key links - I've applied for membership so I can set those guys straight! I do have some insight into the subjects, since my dad flew the aircraft - some of the statements from folks on those threads are so incorrect it is laughable.
Also - the grey birds - 56-0036 was a C model. 54-1457 was an A model. Those are the only two greey ones I've found photographic evidence of.

It may be scruffy but it is Bentwaters in 1959.

Good heavens that is 51 years ago!!

Thank you so much, that's great. Wish I could read Japanese, would love to know what the caption says. Without that knowledge, it is hard to guess what the story was. I am going to guess that it is located at the depot where the RF conversion was done, and it has been painted prior to conversion - it doesn't look like the s/n is applied to the tail, indicating fresh paint. Why they would paint it before doing the mods, I have no idea.

Any of our Tora guys out there care to translate this for me?
