Great Film! There is a very neat moment in the film that they did a great job setting up...I won't ruin it but It really brings a smile to your face!

Darn these capitalists! They probably want me to sign up, create another infernal password and give them my credit card number...

Why the 'big chin' under that prop? Most Spits seemed more streamlined in that area.

Thanks...

It's a Spitfire PR Mk.XI, the same type as operated by The Hangar 11 Collection from North Weald (the only Mk.XI currently flying). As I understand it, this variant needed a larger oil tank, and thus the enlarged chin was required. Really a neat variant - just like a racer (no guns, no armor windscreen), but with cameras and long range to get the photos needed of targets in Europe.

I just love all these WWII pics of guys smoking while standing beside crashed airplanes. Certainly different than the rules of today.

Cheers,

Jeff

That is a super cool sample, which apparently will only be available on YT until June 5th. I immediately downloaded the whole film from iTunes.

"In 2005, an 83 year-old World War II pilot is surprised to see 16mm footage of his 1944 Spitfire crash for the first time."

Great job by the film makers, but more importantly, an incredible story and insight from the man himself.

edit - turns out the limited YT clip is the entire short movie. Well worth downloading from iT anyhow.

Resurrecting this thread. I just came across this video and for those haven’t seen it, it is a must watch. Below is the link to the film as I don’t think the previous hyperlinks work anymore.

Interesting tidbit about the P 38 turbos up at altitude. I would like to know more.
