How Bout Some Spads

Fri Jan 08, 2010 12:16 pm

Stuck at home today. We had snow last night, & folks here in Atlanta can't drive well in nice weather, so I took the day off. (Not Worried Bout My Driving, Worried Bout Getting Run Into ) Thought I might throw some pics to ya. 8)

Image USFG PHOTO
DESCRIPTION; A U.S. Navy Douglas AD-5W Skyraider (BuNo 132751) of airborne early warning squadron VAW-11 Det.J Early Eleven on the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge (CVA-33) in the western Pacific. VAW-11 Det.J was assigned to Air Task Group Three (ATG-3) aboard the Kearsarge for a deployment to the western Pacific from 9 August 1957 to 2 April 1958.

DESCRIPTION; A Douglas AD-3 Skyraider in the late 1940s. Note the extended dive breaks at the sides and below the fuselage. The tail code "R" indicates that this aircraft belonged to Carrier Air Group 17 (CVAG/CVG-17).

DESCRIPTION; A U.S. Navy Douglas A-1H Skyraider (BuNo 139609) of attack squadron VA-176 Thunderbolts, circa 1963-65. VA-176 was assigned to Attack Carrier Air Wing Ten (CVW-10) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La (CVA-38).

DESCRIPTION; Douglas A-1E with wings folded at McClellan Air Force Base, Calif., on Feb. 15, 1968.

DESCRIPTION; A U.S. Navy Douglas A-1H Skyraider (BuNo 134569) from attack squadron VA-52 Knightriders. VA-52 was assigned to Attack Carrier Air Wing 19 (CVW-19) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14) for a deployment to Vietnam from 19 October 1966 to 29 May 1967. This aircraft was also the personal aircraft of the air group commander (CAG), Cdr. Bill Phillips.

Image USFG PHOTO
DESCRIPTION; A Douglas A-1H Skyraider is lifted from an U.S. old escort carrier onto a barge, on 1 January 1967. The A-1H was the former U.S. Navy BuNo. 135324, which was the last Skyraider operated by A-1 fleet readiness squadron VA-42 Green Pawns, in September 1963. Later it was obviously passed on to the U.S. Air Force for service in Vietnam, where this photo was probably taken. Most surviving Skyraiders were passed on to the South Vietnamese Air Force in the early 1970s. Several former U.S. escort carriers were used as aviation transport ships (AVT), to transport aircraft from the U.S. to Vietnam.

Nice pics, big ol boy the Spad!
Understatement of the year, "folks in Atlanta can't drive well in nice weather", but the year is young!!!! Not sure if it is worse than Houston or not!

Always been curious about the AD-5W with no "blue room" rear canopy. Normally, when you see that style of rear canopy on a USAF machine it's designated A-1G, not A-1E ...

The A-1H being delivered in USAF camo is interesting as it has the early style tail number in small black font. Anybody know when the USAF adopted the large, white, 2-letter tail codes?

The shot of the diving Spad is interesting. Looks like the insignia on the fuselage dive brake was duplicated underneath it.
