My new wife and I are honeymooning in Vegas in a couple weeks and we have decided to take a drive into California for a day since she's never been there. I visited March Field's museum in 2006, I have always wanted to see the Planes of Fame museum in Chino. We are going there Sunday the 24th. Any tips or suggestions? Will they let me check out the B-50 even though it's in storage?

I think the B-50 is accessable, but you won't be able to go inside. POF is moving stuff around right now for a grading project so let me check to make sure!
<EDIT>
I've verified that it is accessable but you cannot get inside.

Go to POF at all cost! It is a moral imperative! Also eat breakfast at Flo's Restaurant on the access road near the Airport. The best greasy spoon in SoCal!!! And if you can take the trip 90 miles north, Edwards AFB and Plant 42 has some great aircraft to check out. Matter of fact if you are coming from Vegas, you can pass right by Edwards and Palmdale on your way down to Chino.
Road trip!

POF is great to see airplanes, but it is no garden spot, it can be a bit of a dustbowl. You might consider driving over to the coast, to Santa Paula airport. Not many warbirds, but some great antiques and classics. You can probably arrange a ride in something fun at either place, especially POF. I'd phone ahead at either location to make sure. I don't think there is much to see at Santa Monica anymore, but if you are there in past there were two restaurants, one upscale ( for an airport) on the south, or east side, right on the field, and Spitfire Grill just off the access road on the south or east side. It is sort of a bar cafe, but with good moderate food, and a fun atmosphere. Last I heard, DC-3, the upscale and very hip restaurant on the west side was closed. CAF has a chapter at Camarillo and does some rides, I have not been there. The Monterey, Santa Barbara area is pretty to visit on the ocean, not far planes as for as I know.

Definitely make the stop at Chino! Many great enhancements and changes at Chino and the area--especially at the Planes of Fame! Several new hangers and lots of great airplanes and of course at POF-- many of them fly!
You'll really enjoy a visit. Bill G-- you ought to stop by sometime and see the latest as well. You'll be impressed.

That's where I'd go if I wanted the romance to fizzle quickly...

WWWRW2007,
POF is nice to vist (I was there about 2 months ago), but also check out the Yanks Museum down the street.
Edwards AFB, is also nice, about 15 miles form my home.
I spent my Honeymoon at the Reno Air Races (preplanned, the wife went back home to work).
Enjoy

Tom N, Chino is a great place for guys and airplanes. But I really doubt that most ladies have it as their romantic dream spot for a honeymoon. I have never heard of any lady that complained because someone took them to some place that was too clean or too comfortable or too upscale or the ocean view was too beautiful.
I have not been to Chino in some years. I have read on WIX how hot the weather has been at airshow time. And I have eaten at Flo's

Well it certainly sounds like it will be worth the trip. It's going to be just an afternoon thing as we are only taking a day trip into CA. Is there anything behind the scenes that I should ask about when I'm there?

bdk, I don't know what was funnier, your quip or the post headline....Honeymoon at POF? Well, I guess doing POF is the
ultimate love test. Junkyards galore!

If she's with ya, she's a keeper for sure! Good luck![/quote]
She's a keeper there's no doubt about that. She's not really into warbirds......... yet but at least she lets me enjoy them still.

Maybe if you are lucky ,they will let you degrease some parts, maybe even a whole Skyraider, or at least a T-28, if they have one. That ought to really warm her heart, soften her skin and make her smell like every mans secret wish, ie a Harley.
But there is a drawback, if you do get to crawl under a Skyraider and play with some nice toxic solvent, then think how jealous and upset your Mother In Law is going to be when she finds out how much fun she missed out on. She'll want to come next year.
By the way,if she is an animal lover all you have to do is walk a little way outside the airport to a vacant field and see some of the native wildlife. One of them, the Mojave rattlesnake is a little hard to spot with its camouflage, but you can usually pick up their movement as they slither away right after they strike. Not as bad as it sounds, more than half the victims survive, no worse than a Mexican soldier at the Alamo.
Don't get confused by the other big set of buildings near there, that is the prison.
Anyway, even if this was not what she had in mind, and she does not enjoy the scene, she will probably forgive and forget real soon. After all, a lady's memory for anything any male does wrong is pretty short, about like the lifespan of granite.
Hope you don't mind a little humor, and to be serious, they may be offering rides in something fun at Chino. If she is not used to riding in a warbird, I'd suggest dong it in the morning while it is cool and calm. Last time I was there flying in the show, we stayed at a nice Hilton nearby. Bet there are some romantic B & B around also.

There has never... EVER.... been a more accurate statement than that!
wwrw2007: Remember... Your wife is your best friend… as long as you do everything her way.
She may let you enjoy them... but... well you will find out...
My wife is one of the best... if not the best! And there is no way I would be able to get away with that!

Good luck and let me know how it works out for you... if you survive...

Some of this I will have to disagree with. POF has modern, state of the art toilet facilities now- with automatic soap dispensers no less! And I've never seen a snake there in the past 30 years. (six-legged) Black Widows yes, gophers yes, snakes no. The native wildlife consists of cows and chickens, with an occasional goat. Bill might be surprised to know that there is even a Carl's Jr. and a McDonald's within a few miles of the airport.

Wow!
Cows and chickens? hmmmm....

I don’t recall seeing a romantic episode on fantasy island with cows and chickens… but hey… maybe it works…

BDK, As for the snakes, well I did not write that there were snakes at the airport, I wrote of vacant fields outside. And there is a tv program that I have seen about an emergency room doctor in Ca. who treats a lot of snake bites, including Mojave rattlesnakes. Maybe both the doctor and myself are wrong, and the whole state is like Ireland and snake free. Might be a few aspiring Bernie Madoffs in L A, though.
As for the restroom, I stand corrected and I have edited my post. A few years back I was at an event for an aviation related charity that has raised $millions for for children's cancer research. It was at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in downtown Denver. They had the fanciest restrooms that I had ever seen, big with genuine marble everywhere, lot's of sinks and real cotton hand towels. I commented to the host on how nice it was and they said they just had the builder copy the facilities at Chino. I believe it is an exact replica of the one at Flo's.
The lady might really like to see the cows there in case they don't have any in Wisconsin. And as for Carl Jr.s, I did miss that one. Might be the competition that made DC-3 close.
Anyway, if the lady is going to be hanging around airports and warbirds, it is time to start to toughen her up. When she comes to Osh or Sun N Fun, don't want her whining about the port a cans.
