It's one of the GM Futurliners that were bult as a traveling display vehicle.

They are pretty rare now a days and I think Peter Pan Bus Lines in Springfield Mass, has a restored one. the sides opened to show the display. This one was obviously about aviation.
Neat thing to have, if you can find one!

How Ironic.
I saw one of these on the way home tonight.
It was sitting outside of the Peter Pan bus building outside of PVD.
All set up with the light bar extended, it was a sight.

First displayed at the 1939 New York World's Fair, the fleet of 12 Futurliners traveled across the country as part of the GM Parade of Progress. The enormous horizontal doors that covered the sides of the Futurliners lifted to offer display space for the latest technology of the time: television, the microwave oven and the jet engine, to name a few. Sadly, the Futurliner was to become a victim of the progress it predicted. It was largely forgotten until Peter Pan Bus Lines acquired one found languishing in a state of disrepair in an upstate New York corn field. The company purchased the Futurliner and began to restore the gentle giant at the Coach Builders garage in Springfield, Mass. Today, the Futurliner is restored to its former glory and it still serves as a rolling display, offering opportunities to see the vision of the future as seen through the eyes of the past.

I agree that the plane is a panther/cougar - considering the year is '54, I suspect a panther.

The car is a '54 Olds F-88 Roadster, the Motorama equivilent of the '53/'54 Vette (there were Pontiac and Buick versions as well).

Pretty sure that the one standing next to the car is a Cougar... I am an expert spotter as there seem to be lots of them operating from NAS Scottsdale these days
