'War Birds' film flying at TMU Pictures
Michael Chait set to direct combat action-adventure movie
By Jay A. Fernandez

Dec 6, 2009, 11:00 PM ET
TMU Pictures is moving forward with the action-adventure film "War Birds."

Michael Chait wrote the original story and will produce and direct the screenplay written by Josh Staman and Bryan Binder. J. Todd Harris ("Bottle Shock") and screenwriter Richard Jefferies ("Tron Legacy"), who will polish the script, are producing.

Sean Miller and Kyle Heller of Chait's Michigan-based TMU Pictures also are producing. Marc Marcum will serve as co-producer.

"Birds" follows an Air Force veteran-turned-reckless airshow re-enactment pilot as he gets pulled into the underground culture of illegal, real-life aerial combat. Shooting is scheduled for the summer in Michigan using all real airplanes and aerial sequences, including authentic P-51 Mustangs, P-38 Lightnings, F4U Corsairs and a B-17 Flying Fortress as well as modern military helicopters and jets.
"Titanic" cinematographer Russell Carpenter will serve as a visual consultant.

"I love big, exciting, action-adventure movies, especially when they are shot live, in camera," Chait said. "Growing up the son of an artist and a pilot, I've always worked the drama and production value of aviation into my movies. That's still the best way to truly immerse an an audience in the experience."

Wow, that sounds like a terrible story line   But, on the other hand I am all for seeing warbirds on a movie screen. I'll just wait until is on DVD and watch it on mute.

Perhaps a better title should be "Iron Eagles over Reno".

I hope they also decide to take the space out from in between "War" and "Birds". It is time for Webster/Microsoft Word to get it right!

Sounds similar in a way to a book I have stuffed on my bookshelf somewhere called "Gray Eagles". Set in the 1970s, the plot involves a group of wealthy ex-Luftwaffe pilots who set up an operational Staffel in the SW US and, flying restored Bf-109Gs, provoke the CAF (back when it was the CONFEDERATE Air Force) into a live-fire fight by 1.) lighting up the static ramp at a Chino airshow and 2.) blowing the cr*p out of the flight line at Williams AFB.

I have to admit that this movie makes me nervous, because a heck of a lot of people are going to see it and come away with the impression that "illegal, real-life aerial combat" actually happens. Then they're going to call their Senators and Congressmen and demand that something be done about it.

The warbird community has enough to deal with on the legal/regulatory front WITHOUT having to explain that "it's just a movie".

Half that footage was at Thunder! I'm kinda confused by the trailer. Doesn't really explain much of the story at all, hence the "test footage" text i suppose. This should be funny to watch progress.

I don't know. I'd have to see the script, because that is EVERYTHING when it comes to a film. If it doesn't start out good, it'll never be good.
I don't understand what all the ground forces battling represent in this fund raising trailer.
The synopsis is about aircraft actually dueling it out for real, yet they show them blowing up a bunch of German and American soldiers.
Also, it doesn't tell the story or show any compelling characters. If it's gonna be successful, you gotta have people you like and some type of relationship with an antagonist to make it work.

Remains to be seen and I'm not swayed yet. :?

Nice shots of the aircraft though. :)
