B-17 Tire

A while back I was asking for a tire for a warbird for my gameroom, and Bill Greenwood kindly gave me one that he had used on his Spitfire. I want to try and get a B-17 main tire to use as a coffee table in the gameroom. Does anyone know where I might be able to get one that has no life left on it that was on a B-17 and can still clean up OK. Thanks guys

I think that I may still have 4 that came off of FiFi mains. (Same size as B-17). Appaerntly someone was a litlte bit aggressive on the brakes and there is a small flat spot on what were pretty nice tires. I'm not sure if they are still around or not. We have a large building where we have our misc "junk" and they may be burried in there somewhere or we may have gotten rid of them a long time ago, or they could be sitting out on a pallet somehwere and all dried up and ruined as well I'm not sure. I can look around. Also, FYI what makes a great little end table is a medium bomber sized main wheel polished up with a piece of glass sitting that sits in the resessed lip of the rim. You could do a coffee table similarly with a heavy bomber main wheel. B-25s main wheels look really cool in this setup. I may have some connections for cheap decent looking but not airworthy wheels as a friend of mine got a whole bunch of them off old cotton trailers that were using them many years back and he may have some left.

chris you work at the usaf museum jack up a fort & take it!! whats the disposition on the belles original tires or swoose, will they be replaced or restored?? maybe you can wangle 1 of theirs if they are to be replaced.

Neat idea, but impractical to the max. Tires stink! The compounds in them give off vile odors and may contain unhealthy compounds. Several years ago I bought a NASCAR 'takeoff' @ Las Vegas,(WOW! a bargain @ only $25 for a real Dale Jarrett tire) had it UPS'd home (Incredible, only $27.95 to ground ship it home) and had a sheet of glass cut to top it (only $35 or so to have that cut does it get any better??). After a few days in the house, the second former (did I ever mention that I have AIDS, Aviation Induced Divorce Syndrome) proclaimed 'it smelleth' and it really did have a vile, nasty, sulphurous odor. It went to the garage, where it stunk the place up (including the interior of my 63 Tbird even with the doors closed on the car), and eventually to the local tire dealer where I paid a few bucks to be done with it. (So, i'm out about $95 bucks on something I don't even possess anymore)
I'd recommend something else like turning an old elevator into a glass topped end table or an old windshield like from a 27 or 37 into an end table.

motoart's stuff is beyond cool, i could drown in drool when looking at their work, all 1 of a kind unique, with quality workmanship. the problem is their pricing caters to the travolta / cruise crowd of warbird buffs.

Interesting, I have 4 Nascar tires in one room and I dont smell anything funny about them,

Used to have a bunch of airplane stuff all over the house for a long time. Had a Gear door off a SB2C-4 from "Somewhere in VT" that hung on the wall. I also had a Radome and a gear door off a Beech 1900. The nose gear door had a PERFECT imprint of a bird strike. But I am married now and so I cant have all that stuff laying around the house.

I am isolated to one room and thats the WAR room so not too much Aviation stuff will be in there other then the A/C door of a UH-1 and my Tail rotor blade that is signed by pilots. I also have a OH-6A skid that is still in the crate from Hughes since 1968. It will be separated from its crate in 2010 as its being delivered to FT. Rucker to a Reunion where my friend will have his fellow VN Veterans sign it for me!

Chris, I'll take a picture of our 'dining room' table at the hangar. It's a B-24 wheel rim on its side with 20mm rounds (powder removed ) holding the glass up.
