VA-152 was assigned to Attack Carrier Air Wing 16 (CVW-16) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany (CVA-34) for a deployment to Vietnam from 5 April to 16 December 1965. The foam visible was used to ensure a relatively smooth wheels-up landing. The aircraft with a tail hook also used an arresting cable, so that the damaged aircraft would slide to a quick halt.
