Fri Nov 13, 2009 11:13 am

This is Val Halla. Anyone have more info? Hopefully the damage is minimal and can be repaired.

WHEW! Thats a relief! Now that the rainy season is upon us here in the great Northwest, might be time to do an 'inch by inch' on the harnesses

I think I had the same problem....fortunately on the ground.
The plane behind me said "they never saw anyone jump out of a plane so fast!"........I only waited for the engine to stop, though.

Think we've got a handle on the problem and we're going to give it a good going over after we get the F-89 out of the hanger. Only damage was to the fabric resistor cover.

And that's all I'll say about that... (for now)

Its a more common problem than one realizes.
Been happening for years.

Yea, Ask Ed Shipley about his at Geneseo or Batavia way back.
In Ed's case it was the stock canvas covers over the resistors. They Look good but a fire hazard.

Vlado and Rich,
Thanks guys, that's about what I thought. If we find anything more substantial I'll pass it along...

I think the incident ou speak of was at Sussex, around '98 I'm thinking. I was standing at the intersection of the 3400' runway when Ed went by still in the air. I knew that wasn't good. He did a GREAT job of zig-zagging once down without groundlooping her, and got stopped with some runway to spare.

If he would've opened the canopy, kept his cool, and the smoke dissipated enough the pilot could've just landed w/o declaring an emergency and nobody would've known the difference.

Then, when the tower calls him and says you've got smoke somewhere, the pilot could say, "leave me alone I'm having a cigar". Ha Ha

Then the tower responds, "ok, we're sending the EPA to your hangar for clean air violations" Go figure.
