Allison in a crate

Well folks it's another New Surplus engine in a crate story

We just ferried a Cessna 402C from Indonesia to Australia and the engineer took me over to his friends barn where I viewed this little beauty, an Allison V-1710-115.

I don't know much about Allisons but a quick search on google brought it up as a P40N engine.

He wants to sell it so I said I would market it for him , the buyer will deal direct with the owner after the auction closes.

If anyone knows of other applications for this engine let me know.

I took the photos with a cheap Kodak digital camera I keep in my flight bag, it doesn't do data plates very well.

I took nearly 20 shots of the data plate and all weren't clear.

I'm waiting on some photos via email from the owner.

The RNZAF Museum here in Christchurch are rebuilding a P40F(Merlin powered) into a P40E. The Allison they are fitting is an NOS (New Old Stock) and had never been used. Incredible but considering the sheer numbers built not surprising a few unused engines turn up.

This is for the P-38 and turns the oppositie for the value is demished somewhat. It can be converted to be used on P-40, YAK ect but not cheap.
Also if it's been in moisture there's another problem. The one here in town is the very same version and has been in a heat shop for 60 years
but the highest offer was $10K the owner is looking for $50K which is just not going to happen.

Thanks Jack for the heads up on it being a P38 engine.

Moisture's not a problem , stored in a dry and hot area in North Queensland , Australia.

The data plate says its a -115 with right hand rotation - which would make it suitable for a P-40N surely (as all P-40 variants use right hand rotation props)? It would need to be a -113 with left hand rotation to be suitable for a P-38.

Its a Rolls-Royce Merlin-66

The fact that the Allison is in a wood shipping crate does not indicate that it is "new surplus".

I don't recall metallic blue as being an original color either!

Still a nice find though, just don't get your hopes up on big dollars.

I have an identical zero time factory Allison - colour and wooden shipping support/crate are exactly the same. The engine is gray, as the pictures show. If you look closly, the colour is gray, not metalic blue.

However, the Merlin pictured does seem to be on a newer shipping support / crate.

I believe this engine has never been used or put in an aircraft , have a close look at the photos on the website.

The guy has a couple of Merlins as well , a -25 (RH Mosquito) and a -102 (Lancaster bomber I think) but these engines are cores / as removed.
