Cool shots with one stupid question.
Why does the data block on Glacier Girl say P-38E when it's a P-38F-1 :?:

And why is it in the Eurostile font, which didn't exist until 1962?

(Sorry if it's a nitpick but I spent many years as a proofreader; seeing aircraft markings in the wrong font for the era is a personal pet peeve. Especially tail numbers in 1958 Helvetica.)

.25 cents of decals on the ''insert number here'' million dollar a/c  :?
But since the subject was broached those oh so sexy smooth contured numbers the the POF F4U-1A are really odd

Awesome pictures, thank you very much for sharing them! It is always fun to keep up to date with what's happening out there.

Jack, what I've been told from a person who had contact with the restoration crew, is that it is a production quark that was simply copied in the restoration itself - evidently the aircraft was ordered as an E model, but during production came to be a P-38F-1-LO. The E managed to stay however within the production block script.

I was told when I visited the Museum in KY that once had her was that...

She was built a "E" and upgraded to an "F" but the stencil was never updated to reflect the changes. She was put on ice with the "E" markings and that was the way she was painted when restored.

If I recall correctly.

Except I doubt with her being practically new I doubt there was a upgrade to go through.
Another goof was at the time off the crash the red balls had had been oversprayed with white.
Don't get me started on the fancy airbrushed artwork :vom:

Hope you bought a Diet Dr. Pepper at least. Nobody came through with the pledged $50 donations from the Picadilly Lilly restoration thread... (except one sucker = me!) :x

The Buchon that had the landing incident in the UK when making the Pearl Harbor movie back in 2001.

Lockheed did use a similar style of font for data blocks, it seems to be without 'stencil twigs' so I presume it was a rubber stamp or perhaps a decal of some sort - I have also seen it on a P-38 oil filler cap. Not quite 100% 'Eurostyle' but pretty close and I imagine the nearest font they could find.
