118th TRS Marked P-51

Hi all,

My first time posting here so please be gentle.

A client of our shop has recently acquired, through an unusual set of circumstances, a P-51 in the markings of the 118th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron. I am wondering if any of you out there can offer me some background and history of this aircraft.

I don"t have any numbers from the aircraft that may help in research at present; but only a few Mustangs flying recently have carried these markings so I'm hoping it won't be too difficult to nail it down.

The only deails I can offer right now are that it is a P-51D, silver, painted in the markings of the 118 TRS.

Any and all information you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Hope to have more details soon.

The P-51 with the red lightning bolt outlined in red looks nice but is not accurate for the 118th TRS. The 118th TRS had a black lightning bolt outlined in yellow. My uncle, Phil Dickey, designed the paint scheme in China in October 1944 and I have several color photos of the airplanes in China. Selby Burch of Orlando, FL restored a P-51 in the squadron markings in the 1990s but it has since been sold and now resides in Seattle, WA marked as Hell-Er-Bust.

Very cool! Could you post some of your photos? Did he relate any stories on his design? Is he still with us?

It's always been one of my favorite Mustang designs. I'd love to see one flying the correct markings again.

heck-Er-Bust has since moved. Its in Idaho and last time I saw it, it was parked in the INCREDIBLE WarHawks museum with the Paul Family's P-40s and other aircraft.
