A few shots from the Shuttleworth Military Pageant held on August 2nd. At last we got some summer weather.
Starting off with the gorgeous Hawker Demon making its airshow debut in the hands of Stu Goldspink
Self portrait?
The exhaust muffled the sound of the RR Kestrel somewhat allowing the the wing bracing wires to play their tune. a pre-war Bluenote!
On with the rest of the show, with a number of visiting acts. Starting with the Hunter and the Gnat, XE601 continued the bluenote theme.
I couldn't resist these two
The Vacher Hurricane made a welcome return visit
ever get the impression that one is a target? (one feels violated)
Dangling in the Dagling (can one say "in" when talking about this aircraft?)
Finally, after a short gap to allow the wind to drop the Edwardians came out, its been a while since they were flown and we were treated to some superb flying in almost perfect conditions.
From Lightning to Mosquito to Comet Racer to... well you get the idea! George Ellis gets the "hammer down" in his pursuit of the Boxkite! Thanks George

Second, are the thingies just below and aft of the roundel, counterweights to be used for when there is no gunner in the back seat? I know the Swordfish has some big ol' weights inside, but I wouldn't have thought they would've put them on the outside like that.

They are indeed counterweights, I have no idea why they are outside but having sat in the rear cockpit of the Hind before, there isnt a whole lot of room to remove them quickly should you actually want to put a human in there!!

Always love your stuff from Old warden....such a great place. I never got (or read maybe) your response, are they still progressing with plans to extend the runway so the Comet can fly?

The runway was extended several years ago, however it still has an estate road running across it. There is a plan afoot to divert the road although it is not a pre-requisite of flying the Comet (and its a good thing to do for all aircraft operations at Old Warden)
The aircraft does, however, need some modifications to its undercarriage as a result of the design flaw which caused the collapse in the first place. In all honesty I really dont think flying the aircraft from Old Warden is a sensible thing to do. It bites! Its last pilot says its caused him so much bother in the past that he has nowtold the collection he doesnt want to fly it.
