Pre-war 39th Pursuit Squadron aircraft numbers

Anyone know of a way to correlate the a/c numbers assigned to the P-39's used by the 39th PS, 31 PG to a specific aircraft/pilot?

After studying a few photos I'm thinking it was totally random. :(

BTW, 39th PS a/c were numbered "10" through "39"
