Some neat old P-51 Mustang parts and their packaging

Today, while trying to put as many finishing touches on the new Mustang as possible, we finally opened up two pieces I've been anxious to see for several months- two air filters that are new old stock. In original paper and wrapping, these things haven't been touched in more than 60 years.

I took a nice big gulp of that 1945 air when we tore them open!


With all the various projects, airplanes, and mechanics on this board, I'm sure a lot of you guys here have seen similar packaging. But for those who haven't, I snapped a couple quick pictures. I think it is so cool to see these old pieces. The materials used in packaging and the attention to detail are astounding. These pieces were in superb condition.



















I love seeing the employee name and inspection stamps on those tags. Very cool!
For some reason, I neglected to take a picture of the filters themselves.

Pretty cool! It's always interesting to open up one of these old packages; though sometimes they're so well preserved I hate to disturb them. A part can only be new once...

The most interesting tag I have ever seen, was when a colleague of mine unpacked a pack of gaskets at work. We found the usual tag with "Packed with pride" and so on,
but in handwriting on the same tag was "I HATE MY JOB!".....

about 10 years ago i bought a ww2 usn shutter signal light. new old stock, never opened since 1945. then i gave it some sunshine. i also had 96 ww2 usaaf chamois lined headset cushions, still boxed. another good 1 was the spark plugs that went to the b-17, still in cardboard tubes & coated with cosmoline. i had 10 0f them. it defies the imagination of of the quantity of new old stock ww 2 items that are still circulating. my dad got into the army surplus business in 1946, & cashed out in 1960. he had 7 stores. he was selling a-2 & b-3 jackets for 25 bucks in that time span!! makes me sick!!
