Delta-winged aircraft at Hagerstown Airport

Sat Jul 18, 2009 9:36 pm

Several aerial photos show a delta-winged aircraft at the Hagerstown, MD, airport. Location is 39 42 25.75 N 77 43 22.83 W.

Zoomed in on it with Bing maps, but still unable to ID it.

What is it?

It's a 1953 Fairchild SM-73 Bull Goose Decoy owned by the Hagerstown Aviation Museum. See: http://www.hagerstownaviationmuseum.org ... eum_03.pdf

The first link that Ryan posted, to a pdf page of museum exhibits, shows a derelict C-82A in the lower left corner and an airworthy one in the top left corner. It calls both of them a "Flying Boxcar" just like the C-119 at the top right. I know the C-119 was derived from the earlier C-82, but I thought the C-82 was called a "Packet."

The C-119 was indeed called the "Flying Boxcar", and the C-82 was called the "Packet". Calling them both "Flying Boxcars" is a misnomer.

Thanks, Ryan.
