That is a tanker conversion, Jack. If Steve Birdsall is WIXing maybe he knows the serial number of this one. I'm not certain which Group she's from, but it is interesting that no Hump symbols have been painted on yet.

I remember reading somewhere that it took 7 gallons of gas to haul one gallon of gas across the Himalayas for the B-29s.

The 58th Wing practically wore out the entire fleet hauling bombs and gas to the forward bases. Eventually they added some C-109s to the trucking operation. The 40th Bomb Group newsletters had some stories about the C-109 deal--that was a VERY unpopular part of operations in the CBI. I've got a couple great photos that were taken at Piardoba when the 462nd was home-based there. I'll try to find them and post them on this thread.
