Restorted Marine UH-34 Flying

Thu Jul 16, 2009 12:52 pm

From Aircraft Maintenance Technology Magazine. Thought there would be some interest from this group.

Restored Vietnam-era UH-34 Marine Helicopter Flies to EducateMarine Helicopter YN-19 was born at the Sikorsky Aircraft Plant in Stratford, CT, and delivered to the United States Marine Corps on Oct. 28, 1963. It served in Vietnam until June 1969 with the "The Flying Tigers" Marine Helicopter Squadron 361 on three different occasions.

This particular UH-34D was only one of 462 produced by Sikorsky and its primary role in Vietnam was troop insertion/extraction, cargo transport, and medical evacuation. Total production of the H-34 series and its civilian derivative, the S-58, was 1,800 aircraft.

After six years of dedicated service to the Marine Corps, YN-19 made it back to the U.S. in flying condition, to end up as a stripped shell in the custody of J.H. Helicopter Service in Cochise, AZ.

On July 2, 2001, a dedicated team, led by Al Weiss, purchased YN-19 and shipped it to New York, NY, to begin restoration. On Nov. 12, 2005, and more than 20,000 man hours later, YN-19 took to the air again to begin its new mission to preserve and promote the history of the UH-34D Marine Helicopter and those who flew, maintained, and supported it during war and peace.

This team will carry out its mission by traveling throughout the U.S., attending events and venues that will allow it to inform and educate people about the important role this helicopter and its crew members played.

A mention should be made about the guys at Inola, OK. I was lucky enough to visit them when they had three UH-34D's in the air at the same time. That part of Oklahoma could have been mistaken for Vietnam!

Thanks for the heads up CrewDog! Great to see another UH-34 back to life!

Note, remove the period at the end of the Freedoms Flying Memorial address and the link will work.

All taken during a visit to the YL-37 Group at Inola, OK. These great guys held a special get together in 2003 for the Vietnam Vets of HMM-362. Special guest was Archie Clapp, who was Squadron Commander of the first Shufly squadron to be deployed to Vietnam in 1962.

Is the subject H-34 USN BuNo UH-34D 150570? If so, does anyone have any pictures of the restoration? It would be great to have a shot or two uploaded to the Locator...

Sid and Jack,

Great pictures! Gotta love a helicopter post - even for those of us who've never flown anything but fixed wing. I recently received some great digitized Kodachrome pics of HRS's with MAG-26 at Cherry Point circa 1952 and will be sharing when I get back from the trip I'm currently on.
