iPlane Spotter

Sun Jul 12, 2009 6:43 pm

All,

I finally have my first app available at the iPhone App store. Please check out iPlane Spotter at http://www.bapapps.com/iPlaneSpotter/index.shtml.

The direct app store link is: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=321038595&mt=8

The submission process takes so long that version 2.0 is just about ready to go. It will include air racer info (class, race numbers, pilots). Watch for it very soon. It will be a free upgrade to the original version.

I hope this won't be considered SPAM, since it's highly relevant to this group.

thanks,
Blake

Blake- What exactly does it do

Steve,

It allows access via the iPhone to the entire FAA registry, which is updated regularly. The data is located centrally (not on the phone), so it stays current, with regular updates. In addition to the basic FAA data (with their codes translated into English), it includes aircraft names (i.e. B-25 "Mitchell", A-26 "Invader", etc).

It also has a list of over 400 nose art names, which are tied to the registry. If anybody sees any errors or omissions, please let me know. Many, many hours have gone into compiling this data.

Version 2.0, which will be available very soon, will include air racer data. Preview screen shots are at: http://www.bapapps.com/iPlaneSpotter/index.shtml

I like your avatar, Blake. I have a decal of that same duck that came off the tail of the little Shoestring air racer I was building last year. Thought about framing it and displaying it in my shop sometime.

Thanks, Gary. I've liked Michael Bedard's "Sitting Duck" series for decades. When I saw the aviator variation of it, I knew it was me.

Gary,

What happened to the rest of the Shoestring?

Sold the airplane to Matt Jackson, when I realized my health wouldn't allow me to fly any longer.

I'm getting the new iPhone 3G S. I'll have to get that app as soon as it gets delivered. Thanks.

Version 2.2 of iPlane Spotter has now been released. This update adds some goodies for the warbird guys:

- Listings of warbirds by type (ex. all P-51 Mustangs in the FAA registry)
- Nose Art name list is now indexed for much easier searching.
- Now able to search for last 3+ characters of the N-number. So, if you only hear the last three over the radio, you can still do a search.

I'm still working on the warbird type listings, but over 30 types are now in place. If anyone identifies any problems with the lists (missing aircraft, etc), please let me know. The FAA's data is anything but clean. Sometimes it takes some fairly creative manipulation to get the desired results.

More features are in the works...

Do you think there ever be a program for the Blackberry's in the world??

Lynn,

Possibly. I'm looking into both Blackberry and Palm Pre. I'd also like to add more depth to the data, including pictures for at least the warbirds and air racers. I've already done some work on that.

However, for the number of hours that went into developing this, the sales have been pretty disappointing so far. I'm way in the hole at this point and I really need to work on something with some profit potential, since I'm otherwise unemployed.

I *should* be able to reuse the same database and possibly even the query scripts for the other phones, but I don't really know, yet. It's still a significant amount of work to replicate.
