Mystery part.....anyone know?...Solved!!

Thu Jul 02, 2009 4:40 pm

Anyone know what this is?

Inside is is marked as Assembly #19016 the last digit may not be a 6

Date of MFR is Apr 9, 1943

I didn't clean it up but it is blue on one side and gray on the other. The paint seems to be original.

I realize in retrospect that some size reference in the photos would be helpful. It is about 3 feet wide and about 18 inches high (best guess from memory.)

I apologize in advanve for the cell phone quality photos.

Its a wing tip of some sort. It looks sort of like a Beech 18 wing tip but that one has a fitting on the outer edge for the navigation light.

Wingtip? Horizontal stab tip?

We were guessing horizontal stab or elevator as there doesn't seem to be any provision for nav lights.

Looks a little Lockheed.
A little small in the radius to be P-38.

I'm not the best source on P-38 bits... but to me it looks like the outer horizonal stabilizer of a P-38.

Good luck with your quest.

Cheers,

Nope. Definitely not a P-38 horizontal tip. (Tried to upload pictures, but my computer isn't cooperating with Photobucket tonight.) :?

My first thought when I saw the thread appear with the pic of the Electra 10 :D :D

Did get me wondering if it could be from a Hudson, a PV or P2V???

I thought it looked like a BT-13 wingtip.

Definately not a Lockheed 10..photos show the empenage having round-head rivets. I'm leaning toward a PV-1. It coult be a Hudson, but I've never seen one in blue..I believe they all came from the factory in RAF camo. The paint looks like standard USN Blue Gray over Light Gray..putting it in the 1941/42 timeframe.

or p-63.....my guess

Grumman Part

It is not BT-13. I am guessing Grumman based on part number.

Here are some images I scrounged up on the interweb, showing the stab tip on the Lockheed Hudson. I believe the PV-1 Ventura used the same empennage. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a clear enough view of the underside to tell for sure if it has the same access panels as the part in question.
