A cool picnic

Fri Jun 26, 2009 12:21 am

Karen my girlfriend, decided that she wanted to spend the day outside the other day, and said that she anted to go on a picnic. I let her lead the way not realizing that she planned a treat for me. A picnic at Grissom Air Museum. She took me by complete surprise!

My wife and I travel between Battle Creek and Terre Haute to see her family on a regular basis. The Grissom museum isn't too far out of the way..I keep meaning to pay a visit. I take it the place is open to the public, and not within the base perimeter?

That is correct. It is across the street from the base.

You are a very lucky fellow! And wouldn't it be great if other bases (like McChord) took the hint and moved their museums so the general public could access them, not just active duty and retired types?
Theres lots of interesting things @ McChord that you can't see because of the location.

*sigh*...thanx for the pix Chris. My old stomping ground. I spent so many wonderful weekends there at Grissom as a member/volunteer. Did I read here recently that you are living in Indiana now? They sure could use another member/volunteer to keep the girls in tip-top shape! Any chance that Rollie (former ball turret gunner with the 100th bomb group) was there the day you were there?

...thanx so much for the pix... :P

Thanks Chris
Say can you tell me how high your camera pole goes? The overhead shot of the F-14 is cool! I been thinking of getting one of those for Reno this year, can you give any advice? PM so as not to steal the thread.

Steve...not to answer for Chris about his camera, but there is an old tower inside the park that us MPs would use in the alert tanker area on the base when Grissom was an active Air Force Base. The tower is a wonderful addition to the air park as it allows some great views!

Another little tid-bit of information...our very own "Stoney" here on WIX flew the B-25 on display in the movie "Catch-22". She was painted as Passionate Paulette.

....I know, go to my room and be quiet...

You have to take advantage when the girls offer to go to aviation museums.

If there are aircraft in the circuit and the wind is right you can get some nice landings.
