I'm assuming that all of the black soot under the intake scoop (best seen in the last picture) is from the gun being fired?

You're correcdt, Gary. The Skyhawk uses 2 Colt Mk12 cannons. Because the Mk12s have a considerable muzzle blast a gas deflector is incorporated just above the muzzles. Some units painted the area behind the muzzle with a big black rectangle to minimize the appearance of the gun soot.
