P51 Wham Bam Charleston WV June 16, 2009

There was a post here the other day about the location of the P-51 at the Charleston WV ANG Base. Aparently it wasn't on the last satellite shot. I checked and shot this picture June 16, 2009. It was moved from the top of the hill to the bottom of the hill. I had to shoot this one from the hill across the street since the MPs didn't want to let me in to take pictures even after I explained I was doing it for the guys at WIX......

The plane used to be here in the early 1990s. It does get moved around from time to time, so its not really a Dead Airplane on a Stick, its more a mobile dead airplane. At least they were nice enough to build a fence around it to protect it from the frequent terrorist attacks.

Scott if you want this for the locator, feel free to use it. Larger version of the pic is on Webshots.........

Thanks for posting this, and for checking. Old bird had me worried there for a while, disappearing like that!

Steve:

YUP, original WV ANG P-51, it was kept at the base after the "last" flying one was sent to the NMUSAF in Dayton. Local legends say that this particular airframe was also flown after the "last official flight".....

Its actually pretty rough, if they had some spare cash laying around, I'm sure your shop could take very good care of it.....

It would be great to see this historic Mustang get some TLC
