Grimes Field, Urbana: Where'd they go??

Thu Jun 11, 2009 9:31 pm

I was flying into DAY, coming back from Boston. On the way in we overflew Grimes Field in Urbana, OH. I noticed that the C-47 and the A-26 where no where to be seen.

Does anyone where they are or what's happening to them? Both are in need on restoration so hopefully that's the case.

They have built a building to the north side of the airport where the B-25, A-26, C-47, and the AT-6 are. the B-17 is still in the same hanger that it has been in.

That's good news. sounds like it's time for another trip up there. Is the AT-6 you mentioned, the one the was torn down to Parade-Rest in the back parts room of the B-17 hanagar?

I took my sons over about a year ago or so, and they brought their cheapo-Chinese-made B-17G Memphis Belles in hand (no, that's not a typo...that's what they are) so I could point out parts of the still-growing B-17 that they could easily identify.

The guys over there working that day were fantastic. Every one of them stopped and talked to the boys, and really genuinely engaged them.

As a matter-of-fact, they had their museum grand opening yesterday (Saturday)
