FHC Fly Day 6-6-09 (Bf 109 & Storch)

The weather held out and there was an awesome D-Day fly day featuring the Bf 109 (flown by John Penney) and Storch (flown by Carter Teeters). You know you had a great time when you can't decide which was cooler. Today I think the Storch wins.

Just curious.......how many models of the 109 had the square wing tips? The reason I ask is that while at Ezell Aviation, we made some nice rounded tips for Cavanaugh's Buchon (after it got creamed by a fuel truck at Oshkosh), so that it would look more "original." That just got me to wondering if the tips on FHC's 109 were from a Buchon, or if the 109 was like a Spitfire, in the fact that there was a new model made for each day of the week. (That's not a slam against the Spitfire...I'm just too dumb to be able to keep up with each different style they made.)

I am sure I'll be corrected by the 109 experts... but

The early models had squared tips, and the later model's had the rounded. I think the rounded tips showed up w/ the 109 G (or F).

Messerschmitt 109s up to the 'E' had square wingtips, F onward, round ones - as you know both kinds are bolt on to essentially the same mainplane structures, albeit beefed up as the models progressed.

Joker in the pack is the Hispano Buchons (essentially a 109G aft of the firewall) for the Battle of Britain film had the round style wingtips cropped to look 'E' type square, but weren't cropped as far inboard as the real thing, thus making a kind of hybrid.

So Cavanaugh's 'inauthentic' wingtips would've been ex- Battle ones, I presume, and you took them back to the correct 109G/Buchon type.

Ditto for me on the Spitfires Gary. Especially since they weren't in numerical order. Hey Spooky, How fast was your shutter speed to make the trees in the background look blurred when the Storch was flying? It too slow to make ANYTHING look blurred. Great shots. I love the low passes on the 109.

Thanks for the nice comments, guys! I feel lucky to have these awesome birds so close.

As for the shutter speed, it looks like I shot all the flying at 1/320. Taxi were 1/200.

CAT!!! you're one of the coolest 'cats' here ... all your photos are wonderfully done and you seem to take time and effort to 'get it right' as far as angle, shutter speed etc. .... GREAT!!! stuff .... you should become a WIX moderator, ... lol right! .... hey if you ever have some extra time, could you please take a few photos and post of Paul Allen's Hellcat?

Glad you dig the shots. I enjoy sharing them here. As for being a mod, uhh....no. That's one boat ride I don't feel like taking. They do a great job but I just don't have the time to put into something like that.

Here are some shots of the Hellcat from past visits. If there's anything in particular you want to see on it let me know and i'll try and shoot it next time I end up there. I just wish I could shoot her in the air.

Is the cable on the 109 tailwheel for a steering lock that they've added?
