ROYCE MISSION

Sat Apr 11, 2009 2:27 pm

Hello All..

A very important time for the 3rd Attack Group. On April 11, 1942 and under the command of General Ralph Royce and " Big Jim" Davies , seven B-25C Mitchell bombers of the 13th and 90th Sqdns of the 3rd, and three B-17 Fortresses of the 19th Bomb Group lifted off from bases in Australia and headed for Del Monte on the island of Mindanao, in the Philippines. In the three days of raids, the Mitchells flew over twenty sorties, sinking and seriously damaging three Japanese transport ships, and shooting down three enemy fighters. All seven B-25s and their crews returned safely to base. 1 B-17 was lost and the other two damaged.
