What to do around St. Joseph Missouri.

I'm going to St. Joseph on the 20th for two weeks. Anything aviation related to see in that part of the world? I'll be in class with the MOANG most of the time but I'll have the weekends.

Amerlia Earhart's museum in Atchison, KS. There is also a railroad museum in town.

Other than that, if you can make it to Kansas City, the museum at the Downtown Airport has a Connie, a Martin 4-0-4 and a DC-3 IIRC.

Gallatin, MO: John Gibson has a bunch of T-28s and other aircraft at -I believe- a farm. These used to be in Nevada, near Las Vegas several years ago. Gallatin is appros. 60 miles EAST from St. Joseph.

The National Military Heritage Museum is at 701 Messanie St.
They have a couple of Hueys and an AH-1.

See if Hangar T-1020 is still standing at the ANG side of Rosecrans. I think it is the double-door hangar but could possibly be the smaller hangar just to the south of the double-door. If it's still there take a few photos as it was built during WWII. I don't think many other wartime structures survived the floods over the years.

If you have time for a daytrip, the SAC Museum isn't extremely far.

If you can travel 2 hours north, to Omaha, Nebraska, you've got the Strategic Air & Space Museum... a fantastic place for an aviation fix.

Depending on how much time and how far in distance you are willing to range, there are a few aviation related things to see...As mentioned before..Up by Omaha there is the Large museum there that you don't want to miss...Been a while since I've been to Rosecrans there at St Joe, there used to be an ANG KC-97 ??? Downtown Airport with the Connie, 404, and DC-3...About 210 miles southwest is Wichita where the B-29 resto is going on (I hope still yet)
A lot of historical stuff...from back in the old days...Kansas City area used to be the starting point to all points west...beginning of the Oregan Trail....Missouri River was also a major trade route in the paddle wheel boat days...as mentioned, there is a museum in the historic River Quey area downtown, where they recovered almost all the cargo from a 1850"s steambout wreck...If you are into Civil War history, there were quite a few battles fought in this area...Military forts/ museums are close by...Leavenworth, Kansas has an excellent museum there, with the old military wagons and items from long ago...also have an old German Buzz bomb.....St Joe does have the Pony Express stables, the house that Jessie James was killed, is a few blocks away.....Atchison, Ks...where Amelia was from....McCormik's Distillary...(spend extra time there...free samples!)......Bring yer fishin pole...lotsa good catfishing holes around.

Well if you are venturing anywhere near Independence, MO, don't pass up a visit to the Harry Truman Library. Worth a visit, even if not aviation related.

In Kansas City the re is the National WWI
Museum. Terrific place and very moving. Also has a couple of WWI replica aircraft displayed.
