Celebrity visitors.

great rare pic. gives real perspective to the skywarrior's size compared to home base.

I love this pic so much... it's such a unique angle. Can you imagine trying to get clearance to take that kind of pic today? The Navy legal weenies would scream their fool heads off if you tried it nowadays...

That LIFE archive is one of the greatest things to hit the intarwebs in years.

I assume the Skywarrior was an above decks aircraft only ?

Looks like there's another one parked on the stern

I would guess for landing something like a C-130 or some emergency use where you needed the length of the deck and also avoid the structure.

I was wondering about that too, never saw a carrier stripe like that. Looks like it is more for take-off than landing though. The C-130 tests had a center stripe that went down the center line of the carrier.

Did some searching and got completely distracted by this thread on another forum:

Cannot link the picture, but it shows an F-4 flying with wings folded.

The Whale had a folding tail fin which would allow it below to the Hanger deck.
The long white line was used for the old C-1/S-2's to make deck runs and take off without the cats.

Kinda complicated, but if you steer the ship to the point midway between that line and the lonely palm tree you see on the distand horizon... the ship will go there.

My fighter pilot friend in the Israeli Air Force (now retired) said that this was proof positive that the K factor/redundancy that was built into the F-15 contributed signicantly to it's high price tag , the punch line was " an aircraft with NO wing SHOULD crash "

It's fun to listen to fighter pilots, but you shouldn't pay too much attention. They just think they know how to run the whole of aviation. Evidence shows otherwise. ;)

What's the extra wake in the starboard propwash ? Is the carrier dragging something ?
