The Lancaster owned and flown by the Canadian Warplane Heritage has been grounded for corrosion issues. Read all about it

wow that is bad news!

While it's a hurdle no doubt, I'm glad to see it's nothing structural where they would have to pull the wings apart or anything like that.

Hopefully funds will come in to get the old girl back in the air!

Does she use Hamilton Standard or Rotol propellors?

Hamilton standard props

Yeah, hopefull they can get the funds they need for this.
Our Lancaster here in Windsor has pretty much the same corrosion problem as the Hamilton one, I believe Michael also said the Lanc in Nanton also has the same problem right now.

Ryan
To date our Lancaster(159) hasnt had any issue with propellor corrosion problems that CWH is experiencing. Our #4 prop had some minor surface corrosion beneath the rubber deice boot but this was taken care of during it's rebuild. Pretty amazing considering how long they spent outside!

That is pretty amazing Peter, thanks for the info. I thought Michael had said that you guys had the same problem but I guess not.
BTW I'll have some more updates on the Windsor Lanc tomorrow.

Ryan, you should see the corrosion on the props from FM104 when we took them off and removed the engines.

Just curious & really not knowing.
Which part(s) of the prop assembly are prone to corrosion ? I.E. what is built out of which alloy ?
All the internals of the hub I suppose ?

There is a AD ( Airworthiness Directive) that calls for the inspection of the blade shanks under a teflon strip, it is where the blade shank enters the hub. The AD applies to US planes using Hamilton Standard props, I don't know if Transport Canada requires the same inspection.

Thanks Matt, I didn't know there was an AD out on them. Yes Matt is corrrect from what I have seen the roots of the blades were prone to corrosion issues especially on the static outdoor examples that we have.

The update on the CWH page said that the Greenwood Museum donated 2 propellers and they are in the process of being Overhauled. Cool!

That might mean an easy swap back of non flyiable propellors?
