This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

The what could of been in GAF service... instead Lockheed rocketman got chosen.
Which was better in service worldwide? - F-100 or F-104?
Both were killers.. many pilots died.. flying the curve on landing and take off etc..

It was the wrong choice as it was a political decision which included bribery, further compounded as it was to be made by a consortium of firms in many countries, each with differing requirements. Although it looked like the day point interceptor the USAF had it was a different beast as it also had the roles of fighter-bomber (ridiculous with that tiny wing)and photo recce thrust on it. It was a much heavier aircraft with some unlovely characteristics. The Italians later developed the F-104S.

Wow! I never expected my Hyperscale thread to be posted here. That is cool. The Hun drawing was a lark based on "almost" history and wishful thinking. I chose the Richtofen squadron because it seemed a natural.

It only seems logical to me that you would transition from a subsonic fighter to a mach 1 aircraft before trying to transition to a mach 2 aircraft. Especially when your air force is only a few years old. Erich Hartmann did recommend that type of progression and when his concerns were borne out it helped to stymy his career.
Love the what if paint scheme. Would love to see the same thing with Israeli markings for the P-47 and F-86 which they almost bought.
