Jack - I had that shot on a poster in my room growing up and looked at over my bed every day. Bought it at the Smithsonian in the late 70's. There was a similar shot of a P40 that I did not get but wish I had- I have never been able to find it again but have seen teh P38 shot quite a bit over the years.

Steve are you thinking of the Erik Miller/ Lockheed photo of the flight of 38s sorta looking straight down?? I had that but different photos. Those were E's in 1942 82nd FG.

There were some color shots taken of factory fresh ones in the air around Burbank that were better than the one in the OP and, with due respect, far better than those Red Bull ones. I'm sure we've all seen them. I also have a fondness for the several pics that were taken with one or more other Lightnings positioned between the booms of the foreground one.
Phil Makanna had an amazing pic of Joltin Josie over the San Gabriels that was on the cover of one of his calendars, but I have always suspected that it may have been a cut-and-paste job.
