Is that a box or a big block of cement in the back? If it is cement or some other weight was it installed to give the jeep more more weight when towing a B-24? We once filled a Kubota tractor's tires with water and calcium to do the same thing except we were towing Beech 99s.

Appears to me you can see two wires coming from under the dash to the box so I wuld guess that since he's waving the box is lighted up as "FOLLOW ME"

Radios were big in those days and since the passenger in the jeep has a microphone, I believe the big box holds the ARC receivers and transmitters.
Cable going into box on drivers side looks like power from engine compartment.
