Wow, that's a pretty big speed brake in the first image.

I know it's the ammunition access panel, but seriously though, were there any cases of them ever coming open in flight? Or was it one of those "Check it 5 times before signing off" kind of thing, or, better yet... if it were to come open in flight, I suppose it would just rip right off and become a non-issue other than loss of smooth laminar flow over the wing.

That's a lot of disturbed airflow. Plus if there is any kind of turbulence or maneuvering imagine what happens when "the whole nine yards" of .50 caliber comes out of the bay?

Question on which way the gun bay access doors open...just to satisfy my curiousity.

Did all P47 doors open from the back of the gun bay, meaning you had to feed ammo from the leading edge of the wing? (as these pictures show).

IIRC, P51 Mustangs & F4U Corsairs open from the front of the gun bay, meaning you had to feed ammo from the trailing edge of the wing.

First< please correct me if I am wrong about the Mustang & the Corsair and can anyone tell me which American WWII fighters gun bays opened which way?
