Cradle of aviation museum

I am planning a trip to the museum. Are there any tips, and things that I should be sure to see, and not see? Thanks

I see you're going to Republic too.
At Cradle, everything is great and the old hanger line is pretty cool. I love there Apollo LM stuff. I would look at Google Earth before you go and check out the old sections of Mitchel Field that still exist. Very interesting and it doesn't take a lot of time. very famous airport in it's day.

At Republic, the museum is the main attraction, as the old Republic Buildings are now a shopping center. One of Tallichet's Resturant's is on the east side of the field and has a few of the fiberglass birds out back.

If you're looking for anything else to do, there is an F-14 and an A-6 along Route 25 in Calverton.

You could check out Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. Another airport with lots of history and the Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation is based there. You could drop them an e-mail from their website and see about stopping in to see the C-54 and C-97.

Then again, there is the Intrepid if your that close.

Is there anything left of the old Grumman facility at Bethpage or is it all gone?

A lot of the Grumman buildings are still there, and you can still see parts of the runway and tarmac in places, but the airport is pretty much invisible today.
Check out the Grumman Sticky Thread above and e that plant pics in the old days and then open Google Earth and look at it today.

I used to live in one of the old houses on Mitchel Field (Ellington Ave) back in the mid 60's. I learned how to drive on the abandoned runways, played on the tetrahedron and in the hangars and control tower. There were tons of .50 cal slugs in the sand in the gun aiming bunker that I dug out. The first time that I saw "Flight of the Phoenix" was in the base theater. Lots of good memories.
