O-1 with new shoes

As a test of my new photobucket account, here's a pic of an O-1 on tandem gear taken a couple of years ago. It wasn't too practical on paved surfaces  and the tandems were quickly removed.

looks like a mutation, like finding a catfish with 9 eyes in a polluted pond!!

They must have figured if the idea of converting from a pair to multiple wheels worked for the B-36 it should be applied for everything else! Good old US military thinking...

lol...

After seeing your closeup photo, it doesn't look like this setup would have been too successful in the mud
either. I can hear the maintenance chief cussing now whilst carving the gumbo goo from the works of
this contraption!

Are the two sets of chocks really necessary or is that someone's idea of a joke?

I'm thinking I may have to do one of my little Airfix BirdDog's like this.

My buddy Eric Presten has a set of the Whitaker Tandem Landing Gear that he uses occasionally on his 1949 Piper PA-16 Clipper, and they work pretty good on the grass or a rough strip, but not too good for making tight taxi turns. They were originally designed for the Piper aircraft as Whitaker was a Piper distributor. I wrote a short article on it a few years ago that can still be found online at:

Just trying to see how silly we could make it look :)

And regarding Roger's comments about not making tight taxi turns well; well that is probably an understatement. On pavement, the only way we could get the O-1 to change direction was to get a good head of steam up and then steer with the brakes. It was pretty hard on the gear so we pulled 'em off before any flights were ever attempted.
