I have seen that they are going to fly it to europe and they are going to ship it to europe. does anyone have the whole story?

They were going to fly it, but changed their minds and decided to ship it, was the last I heard.

Two words, Allison Grenades!
They would rather not repeat Glacier Girl!

I don't think it's the Allisons right now. The real issue is with the radiators. If what I've heard is accurate all of the P-38s flying right now are getting the radiators from the same source and they only last 5-6 hours before cracks develop. Oh, and it's expensive to fix. At least that's the way I've heard it. Anyone know more?
I'm pretty sure that's what stopped Glacier Girl from making it over last time and the major thing that would prevent it now. Otherwise I've heard they'd still like to do it.

Pilot duration
Still in P-cola near a dock, will get loaded into the cargo hold(not a barge) of a ship come Monday/Tuesday. From here to Hamburg where it will "FLY" to Austria.

we were always battling radiator leaks. I cant think of a single airshow where we didn't have a small leak of some sort.

having flown there several times it is pretty lonely and vast out there and I would hate to see all that beautiful work lost. I guess ships sink but the odds are better!

Sorry!

Grenade was perhaps a bit strong. They are complicated beasties and pushing them to their limits in range with NO alt landing fields but the Greenland Ice Sheet, romantic as it may be to redo Bolero, the prudent thing IS to ship her.

what exactly is the story with P-38 radiators, do P-40s suffer from the same problem? How much does it cost to replace the radiators every 5-6 hours flight time?

I think the core tubes are too small on the original design. If they made a radiator with less (larger diameter) tubes I think the leaks would be better controlled. the radiator is a pretty massive thing and with two on each engine there is plenty of cooling except during long ground runs. by making the core tubes bigger and opening the radiator doors a bit more I think the problems would be eliminated. Of course who is going to go to the trouble of building a new design for 5 customers.

Glacier Girl had a cracked engine cylinder liner, not a radiator.

The radiators became a problem after that attempt. It is one of the main reasons they can't try it again yet.

'ALLISON GRENADES?' Wouldn't be too sure about that, when we ran MERLINS in the hydro, if we broke a rod during a heat there was usually a brilliant blue/white flash out the carb intake followed by the boat drifting to a stop on the course (and the fun of mopping up 45 gallons of oil out of the engine bay/bilges). When we switched to ALLISONS a broken rod meant the boat went slower (if that was possible) but usually finished the heat on 11 cylinders. We had lots of V5 and V7 MERLIN blocks behind the shop, but comparitively fewer ALLISON ballast blocks.
