An-2 With Attitude!

Thu Feb 05, 2009 11:40 am

Anyone have their big ol An-2 dressed up as a gunship? Might be an interesting 'Nam companion for the Huey door gunners to take bead on! Here is an interesting article on an An-2 attack on an airbase in Laos, in which 4 of these gunships attacked the base and a Huey shot one down and two others went down after colliding trying to get away! That has to be a record if the Huey crew got credit for 3 kills. Air America...gotta love em!!

Has there ever been a "Serious" movie done on "Air America"? Not the farce that Hollywood put out some years back? Went to school with a guy whose dad was an "off the books" pilot flying CAS in an A-26. Told some wild tales.....

The story of the AN-2's that attacked LS-85 is often told in error, only two of the AN-2's actually attacked the site, while the others orbited above. The two that attacked the site were both shot down by Glenn Woods, who was the flight mechanic onboard the Air America Huey using an AK that he wasn't "supposed" to have onboard. The pilot flying the Huey was Ted Moore. An interesting side note is that in the days prior to the attack (I believe it was the day before actually), Moore and Woods were operating in the same area and encountered a Mig! After the attack on LS-85 it was easily surmised that the Mig they encountered was on a photo-recon run of the installation.

Below is a picture taken of Moore and Woods just after shooting down the AN-2's, and below that is a piece of fabric from the second AN-2 that was shot down, it was given to me by Walt Darren who was flying a CASI Porter in the area when the attacked happened. He was in contact with Moore during the attack, and relayed the calls requesting fighter support.
