Radar. The fibreglass(?) nosecone's gone.

I guess irradiation of the cockpit was not a concern back then.
Yikes...

Interesting...didn't know they mounted RADAR like that. Didn't the US mount some on the wing of the PBY?

The Radar behind them helped keep them warm! That is ausual spot for that type of radar, the other spot was up on that step just behind that one on the wing support pylon.but there were a bunch of different types mounted out on the wings and on the forward fuselage.
