Scott should add this rule to WIX (not serious)

Sun Jan 25, 2009 3:46 am

I think Scott should make a rule that states that anyone who opens a thread should have to add a post to that thread. No matter what that thread is about. I see so many times that a thread will be viewed by so many who simply don't post at all. My point is I would sincerely like to see a response by anyone here on WIX who may have something to say regarding whatever subject is posted. I know most all here on WIX have a vast amount of valuable input and I feel cheated to not be able to read what you all have to say. Does this sound fair?

I know my posts are usually very simple and uneducated, but I learn so much by posting these type of threads. I'm not shy. I'll post what I feel is a good question as long as I learn something in the process.

I think that's a very bad idea. Many times people will open a thread to learn, not knowing a single thing about the subject topic. If your proposed rule gets invoked, you're going to DRAMATICALLY increase the spam on the threads. People who have no knowledge or anything to say will be saying worthless things like "yep, I agree, sounds about right". Is that what you want? You want to waste the forums valuable bandwidth with meaningless dribble? Added to this, a rule such as that is very impractical and totally unenforceable. Also, a lot of people lurk here not wishing to join our conversations.

My two cents.

That is a valid opinion but I think my response would frequently be a waste of bandwidth. If my goal were to increase my post count (as if there was some award for that) I suppose it makes sense.

You might want to look at the old thread "I'm Bored" for an example of wasted bandwidth (IMHO). If every thread turned into that I would abandon the WIX.

I wasn't completely serious, I just see 250 folks looking at a thread with nothing to say. Gotta be one in that pile that has something to say. I'd rather have several meaningless posts than nothing at all.

I sometimes get frustrated because a great thread will just fade away because of a lack of interest or it falls to another page or whatever. There's so many great interesting subjects that fall away and never get their fair due. I hate to see that and I hate to re-hash an old topic. And I'm not good at "bumps"

But I truly get your point.

Sometimes as well, it's not that people don't have anything to say as much as maybe they don't have anything CONSTRUCTIVE to say. I try not to post in threads where I'm not adding something to the thread or I feel that there is a purpose to adding my agreement/disagreement to the thread. I take a lot of views with no responses two ways -

1) no one's interested (if there's a question or proposal, etc)

2) they like the thread but it's not one that needs response (i.e. Jack's posting of pictures. We all enjoy them, but you don't necessarily have to respond to that effect, the views tell the tale)

I firmly believe in "less is more" when it comes to communicating. I much prefer to see 250 views without any response, than one or two off-topic inflammatory trolls or outright lunatic ramblings.

At the risk of being off-topic myself, I was very close to stopping regular reading of this forum because of the off-topic rants and raves of a few readers that have, fortunately, been banned. More power to the moderators. Now, back to warbirds and old airplanes in general. More pictures please Jack!
