B24 Assembly Ships

Looking for info on B24 assembly ships - I've read that some did actually fly on raids - anyone able to confirm this?

It seems unlikely since most of them were considered war weary and too problematical to fly operations. Most of them were stripped of armament and were probably flown with less than complete crews. It might be that some of them flew in formation long enough to have passed whatever boundary or time limit defined a mission from an abort without really coming into danger.

Which is why I posted.
One source is an ex B24 navigator who is sadly no longer able to communicate his memories; however he was quite clear about it.

Info from Roger Freeman's book "Mighty Eighth War Diary"

Well, when she's due for a repaint it would be fun to run her as an assembly ship for a season, and then do the repaint back to 1941.
As long as they mask off the nose art!

Wayne Allen, an Ordnance officer with the 445th, distinctly remembered their formation ship flying on at least one maximum effort mission. His family has his enormous collection of photos and undeveloped film, and before he passed he showed me a picture of that airplane taking off. The photo was a bit blurry, but it certainly looked like the tail and top turrets had guns mounted. His memory was still sharp at the time he showed me the photo and he was pretty sure it was taken on the day she flew a combat mission.
Sadly, I don't have access to his collection.
